Silica Gel for drying Flowers: A quick practical guide

Do you want to fix your Flowers and keep their color and shape? In this article, we will walk with you step by step without complication.

Why do we use Silica Gel in the first place?

Why is Silica Gel used
  • It quickly absorbs moisture and "supports" the petals, so the flower keeps its shape and doesn't wilt.
  • Colors come out better than drying by air or pressing, especially with sensitive Flowers.
  • You can reuse it after drying it, meaning the material is economical in the long run.
  • It is very useful for those working with resin, wax, and decor, giving a clean and tidy touch.

Your safety is the most important thing

Safety while using Silica Gel
  • Work in a ventilated place, and if possible wear a light mask and goggles when pouring.
  •  There are types of Silica Gel, avoid the blue-indicated ones and choose the type with orange-colored granules.
  • Store the Silica Gel in a sealed container, because if left open it will absorb ambient moisture unnecessarily.

What do you need to have?

Tools for working with Silica Gel
  • Plastic or glass container tightly sealed and of suitable depth.
  • Silica Gel (orange indicator or non-indicator).
  • Flower scissors, and a soft brush to remove the crystals later.
  • (Optional) Microwave + a cup of water for the quick method.

The traditional method (on a balcony)

Silica Gel in a container for Flowers
  1. Pick the Flowers at their best blooming stage, and dry any water drops on them.
  2. Brush a layer of Silica under the container (approximately between half to 2 cm).
  3. Arrange the Flowers leaving a small space between each unit.
  4. Immerse the Flowers in Silica very well, gently insert the crystals between the petals.
  5. Seal the container tightly and keep it in a dry place.
  6. The usual duration: about 3–8 days depending on the size of the Flower and the thickness of its petals.
  7. Carefully take out the Flower and use a soft brush to clean the residues.

The quick microwave method (when you're in a hurry)

Silica Gel in the microwave

It gives a quick result and beautiful colors if you follow the right steps.

  1. Put a layer of Silica in a microwave-safe dish, place the Flower, and fully immerse it.
  2. Do not cover the dish, and put a cup of water inside the microwave.
  3. Run the microwave at medium power in short batches: usually 1–3 minutes depending on the size of the Flower.
  4. After heating, leave it inside the Silica for 12–24 hours to cool and complete drying.
  5. Clean the crystals with a soft brush.

How do we reactivate Silica and use it again?

Reactivating Silica Gel

As soon as you feel it is saturated and no longer dries like before: spread the crystals on a baking tray and heat them at about 120–150 °C until they become dry again, then let them cool and store them in an airtight container.

Tips that make a difference in your work

Tips for working with Silica Gel
  • Start with dried Flowers whose petals are intact (like Flowers and some round types); the result is easier.
  • Insert the Silica between the petals, not just from the outside, so they don't wrinkle.
  • Don’t rush to open the container early; wait until you feel the petal has become “papery.”
  • After you take them out, a light hair spray or acrylic spray reduces moisture return.
  • Store the ready Flowers away from sunlight and high humidity to keep them dried.

Frequently asked questions

Is Silica Gel safe at home?

Normal home use is safe if you avoid inhaling the dust and keep the material away from children. If you find Silica Gel with a blue indicator type, it’s better to avoid it and go for orange or non-indicator.

How long does the flower take to dry?

Traditionally usually from 3 to 8 days. Microwave: 1–3 minutes heating, then keep inside the Silica for 12–24 hours.

Can I use the same Silica more than once?

Definitely dry it in the oven as we explained, and it will be ready again.
