Introduction to the world of jesmonite (eco-friendly resin)

You may have seen beautiful handmade jesmonite pieces taking over TikTok or Instagram Reels or Pinterest.

 Those matte trays or charms or candle holders and giveaways and coasters with perfect angles emerge satisfyingly from flexible Molds. A range of pastel or jewel tones, and the final finish of terrazzo.

But what is jesmonite? Is it easy to use and make? How do you start? How do you know when to sand or seal it? Can you color it? Is it food safe? Is it toxic?

What is jesmonite material?

Jesmonite is a composite material (which means it is made of more than one component) used in arts and crafts, as well as in some construction and manufacturing.

Simply, jesmonite is a Powder and Liquid, when mixed and left to cure, they turn into a hard and flexible material in a very short time.

 The powder is gypsum-based (gypsum is a soft mineral) and the liquid is acrylic resin.

Is jesmonite safe for food contact?

Jesmonite is an eco-friendly material, but it is not recommended to use jesmonite for direct food storage like containers or plates.

The material is non-toxic, so fruit bowls and plates (wrapped foods) or the like - in a figurative sense.

It is also not safe to use in the microwave or dishwasher.

What molds are suitable for jesmonite?

You can use jesmonite with any type of silicone molds, and what distinguishes it from other materials is that it does not damage any molds regardless of their type.

Does jesmonite withstand heat?

The material partially withstands up to 60 degrees Celsius maximum, good in direct sunlight or generally warm environments.

Is jesmonite break-resistant?

 Very strong, but not as hard as materials like granite or quartz.

 Therefore, it should not be used for floors, cutting boards, or kitchen work surfaces.

 But for surfaces like tables, trays, coasters, giveaways, jewelry, and other decorative items, they withstand all shocks wonderfully.

Can jesmonite be dyed?

Of course! The material has many bright and vivid basic colors as desired, and you can produce any color you want from its basic colors to achieve perfect creativity.

Is jesmonite waterproof?

You can make all your works from jesmonite waterproof and insulating using a special product called Jesmonite Acrylic Sealer. The material itself is somewhat water-resistant without any additives.

How to start with jesmonite?

Here is everything you need to start using jesmonite and casting.

• Jesmonite materials (Powder + drying Liquid)
• Original jesmonite pigments
• Silicone Molds (preferably flexible like resin Molds)
• Cups or mixing containers
• Sensitive electronic scale
• Sandpaper sheets in different grades
• Creativity..

 The mixing ratios for jesmonite material are as follows: (40 grams Liquid for every 100 grams Powder) For example, measure 300 grams of Powder and 120 grams of Liquid. Mix them together in a bowl. This is the magic ratio for jesmonite to make the material strong and cure correctly and quickly.

💡Mixing ratios can be calculated as follows: any amount of Powder multiplied by 0.4 gives us how much Liquid we need.. Example: ( 50 Powder * 0.4 = 20 Liquid)

• Add the color pigments you love - less is more! The pigments are very strong with a high concentration, and you can always add more as desired.

• Mix the two materials well with the colors, and once the mixture is smooth, pour it into your mold. You want to ensure it reaches all corners and crevices of the mold, so gently tap the base of the mold on your work surface, and gently sway it to remove any air bubbles. Then leave it for 30 minutes to an hour. Your jesmonite may heat up as it hardens – this is because jesmonite creates an exothermic reaction during curing but not at high temperatures.

• After 15-30 minutes, gently remove the piece from its mold. If the mixture successfully filled the mold, there should be no holes or gaps from bubbles.
• You can use tissue paper to smooth the piece and make it vibrant in color and soft in texture.

Within 15-30 minutes, you have created an amazing and eternally beautiful artwork!

Here are some simple and beautiful ideas you can make with jesmonite

You can make a stunning marble-like piece by adding small amounts of any color to white jesmonite once in its mold, and lightly stirring (not fully) the color inside the material.

Combine jesmonite with transparent resin and dried flowers to get this stunningly contrasting piece. To achieve this, pour the entire jesmonite into any mold of your choice, then remove it and carefully split it into two parts. Place one half back into the mold and fill the rest of the mold with transparent resin, adding some dried flowers.

 You can make beautiful trays and coasters using different molds with jesmonite, and make office tools or bedroom items, makeup tools, and art supplies

You can make holders and bases for wax using jesmonite and flexible silicone molds
